From IKEA with Love

Thanks a lot IKEA for sponsoring the Scottish Swedish Society’s Lucia 2018 with saffron buns, gingerbread, coffee and hotdogs.

We hope this is the beginning to further collaboration with IKEA. IKEA also invited the Swedish School in Scotland for a guided tour of IKEA Edinburgh earlier this autumn. The children had a great time.

Thank you IKEA!

Who will be Lucia, 2018?

The Society has hosted Lucia celebrations in Edinburgh for many years.  This year we are trialling a new way to decide who will be Lucia.  There are only two guidelines.  They must be aged 15 to 18, (ie born 2000 – 2003) and they or their family must be members of the Society.  Naturally, they must also be willing to sing the Lucia song and other Swedish Christmas songs (nothing solo, so no pressure there). The Lucia procession, followed by a service led by Kristina Andreasson, a minister from the Swedish Church in London, will be at 3pm on Sunday 2 December with a rehearsal beforehand at 2pm.

If you would like someone to be put forward please send an email to before 15 November.  Please include the name and contact details of the young person who would like to be Lucia.  The Committee will then draw lots and announce who the lucky one will be.

If the person concerned is neither part of a family membership, nor an individual member, of the Society, they should join in order that their nomination can be considered.  This is simple to do through this website.  Go to the Member Services tab and follow the links.

Let’s Inherit the Earth

Back in June we posted about a Scottish Swedish joint production of a musical on climate change that was performed as part of the Fringe.  It was very well received.  You will find the details if you scroll back to the post of 16 June.

We have now heard that the show is going to tour around Scotland between now and 3 November.  They are going to so many places that one must be near your home!

All the details are on their website: Profilteatern

Well worth a look.

Swedish Choir’s Concert in Helensburgh, 16 September

Claire Craig has written to tell us about a visit to Helensburgh by a choir from Sweden.  Here is what she wrote.  It sounds most interesting, and well worth a trip down the water.

“I am writing to alert you to a visit to Helensburgh this month by a Swedish choir from Sölleron. They and the Helensburgh Family Singers have been singing together annually in different countries, including our own of course, since 2009. This year we are giving a concert here in Scotland and I thought the Scottish Swedish Society Membership might be interested.
“The  concert  will take place on Sunday September 16th in St Andrews Kirk (in Helensburgh central square) at 7pm. It will include some Swedish and Scottish songs and a piece, Missa Amicitia, composed by one of our group, Agne Samuelsson. There will also be some instrumental pieces and a Handel organ concerto.
“The Swedish choir will be  arriving on Thursday September 13th and staying in Helensburgh until the 17th.
